Cemeteries and new technologies
European cemeteries face the significant challenge of preserving their cultural heritage and traditions while simultaneously keeping up with new technological implementations. For this very reason, a symposium was organized as part of the European Cemeteries Route project, which took place on April 6 and 7, 2017, in Ljubljana.
The symposium was organized in collaboration with the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe (ASCE) and Žale Ljubljana, and was attended by more than 40 participants from 13 countries.

Lidija Pliberšek, the President of ASCE and Director of Pogrebno podjetje Maribor, welcomed all participants.
Attendees of the symposium had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with various topics, from a broader understanding of the European Cemeteries Route project to how digital technologies can both transform and preserve cemeteries as we know them. Participants were also able to test virtual reality technology through a walk-through of the famous Žale cemetery and try out the ARTOUR mobile application.
